excel 2007 put reoccuring 1st row on every page but print gridlines disappears

I have a worksheet that I want the 1st row to print on every page. I put in the reoccuring $1:$1 but when I print the gridlines disappear. the box is checked for the gridlines to print, so I dont understand. I take that reoccuring fomula out and the gridlines pring......
