İ have a windows 8.1 laptop. if i ever have to replace the hard drive,can i make a start-up disk? (like in windows 7) is a recovery disk the same as a start-up disk? and can this be used on a new hard drive to reinstall O/S and software?

There should be a utility on your computer to create the factory restore disks. Please do this right away. If something happens to your hard drvie or the recovery partition, you will need those disks. Mfgs don't include disks anymore, you have to make them yourself using this tool. It is usually found under a folder named after the brand of laptop. You should also create the Windows Recovery disk.
