Before donating my old desk top, how would I erase all personal information from the hard drive?

If it has a factory restore, that is the best way. Performa factory restore to wipe the drive and restore Windows. Depending upon the age of the machine there may be a recovery partition on the drive for this purpose. If not you will need to use the disks which came with the computer. Finally, if you just want to wipe the drive without even having Windows installed, you could download the program at dban.org to fully wipe your drive.
