Jellybean notebook connect to TV by HDMI no signal

I have a new notebook 7" with jellybean 4.1.  I connected mini HDMI to laptop and HDMI lead to TV.   Input was put on HDMI on source of the TV but there is no signal.    There is no options on jellybean to tell the computer it is to send to monitor.  Function buttons don't have any screen alternatives like windows operating system.  Please advise if different leads might work (eg HDMI to av on the TV or... A  powered  connector for HDMI leads.   Thanks
