When i performed a backup for my outlook express files they changed to microsoft word? I cannot open or read them?

Today I backed up all my emails from outlook express, but all the back up files showed in microsoft word?. I deleted them as I could not open them and now it has deleted all of my emails in outlook express. I have since restored the emails from my recycle bin but the files are still in microsoft word? Do you know how I can get them to read and how I can get them back over to OE? Thank you so much
