There are a lot of good options in terms of external USB adapters. I purchased one with two eight inch antenas that can pick up signals from pretty far away.  That is what I would suggest.  You can buy them pretty cheap on amazon.  Just look up wi-fi adapter on amazon.com.  Duel band adapters will give you a better signal.

Yes, you can. I suggest getting one of the Nano's for that. Alternatively, you could replace the internal card .and not have to deal with something sticking out of the USB ports.
