Is there a way I can tell if a file has a virus in it before I open It?

You scan the file with your AV software...

Usually AV software will scan it anyway, when you download it or copy it from another device. However, if the file has a lot of enbedded copmressed files, it may not get scanned fully until you decompress the file. Your AV will scan it at that point in time anyway.
